Approximately 82 Canoes from Salish tribes all over the northwest landed on the shores of the Swinomish nation, 5 minutes away on July 28. Called the Paddle to Swinomish, the event is part of a yearly tradition started in 1989 with the Paddle to Seattle. The canoes are often made out of a tree and are often hard carved & painted. Pullers might train all year. Within each tribe, the elders and the young people work together to learn ancient songs and stories to share with the other tribes during protocol time.
